Jesus in the Temple

Image
Given by The Woman’s Society of Christian Service
Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, the feast was ended and they were returning home, but the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. When Mary and Joseph realized that he was not with them, they returned to Jerusalem and found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions, and they were amazed at his understanding and his answers. His mother told him that they had been looking for him anxiously. “And he said to them, ‘How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I would be in my Father’s house?’ And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them, and his mother kept all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:49-51 (RSV)

Here Jesus is seen in the temple talking with the rabbis. In the door- way are his parents, searching for him. The all-seeing eye above the head of Christ represents the omniscience of God. The open Bible betokens the Light of the World, illustrated by the lighted candle placed in the candle- stick signifying the Church.
