The Miracle at Cana of Galilee

Jesus is seen performing his first miracle — changing the water into wine. John tells the story of Jesus going with his mother to a wedding in Cana. When Mary saw that the family had run out of wine, she turned to the servants and told them to do what- ever Jesus told them. Six stone jars were there, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus told them to fill the jars with water. After they filled them, Jesus told them to take some out and take it to the steward of the feast. When he had tasted the wine he remarked that, unlike most, the host had saved the best wine for last. “This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana . . . and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” John 2:11 (RSV)

Christ, the central figure, is commanding the water jars to be filled. The ray of light streaming from Christ indicates his divinity. The other figures represent the guests at the wedding.

The two hands about to be joined together symbolize marriage, as the dove, or the Holy Spirit, blesses the union. The monogram IHC stands for the Greek letters, Iota, Eta, Sigma, the first three letters in Jesus’ name.
