The central section in this triple window portrays the eternal Christ with the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul occupying each side section. Above Christ’s head is shown the all-powerful hand of God and the dove, symbol for the Holy Spirit, thus picturing all three parts of the Trinity. The key has become the traditional symbol associated with Saint Peter, to whom Jesus said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 16:19 (RSV) The cock is also shown in the window reminding us of Peter’s denial of Christ. The sword in the hands of Saint Paul calls to mind his injunction to Christians to take the sword of the spirit, or Spiritus Gladius, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17 (RSV) The rose, seen in the green border, has been used on the Christmas Kneeler to remind us of Isaiah’s prophecy that when the Messiah comes, the desert will blossom as a rose. These windows were dedicated on March 8, 1964. In 1998, they were moved from the rear of the sanctuary and installed in the Prayer Room. |
