Overview
Hayes Barton United Methodist Church strives to be a community of faith where all persons can encounter, experience, and know the power of the Risen Lord. Celebrating our seventieth year, the church was founded in 1936; ground was broken in 1939 and upon completion, the doors opened with 306 members. The church has since grown into a 2600-plus member congregation and continues to grow each year. The people of HBUMC range in age from birth to 100-plus years. We invite all to join in joyful worship and celebration through the service we offer to God, as we strive to grow in our Christian Faith. In all that we do, may the glory be to God!

Worship
Sanctuary
Main Sanctuary
Worship is an integral part of Christian life at Hayes Barton Methodist Church. Christ is praised; His word is heard; His love, comfort and grace is received through worship. Participants are inspired to go forth and live a daily Christian life.

Traditional worship services are Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The contemporary praise and worship service, called Lighthouse, is Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Special services of music, word and table are offered during Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Each worship service offers a children's message. Nursery care is provided for all services including pagers for parents of infants.

Mission
Our Mission:  Offering Christ, Community and Compassion
In this congregation of the Body of Christ, we celebrate and share God’s grace through worship, ministry, fellowship, mission, Christian education and service. As humble servants called to faithful discipleship, we offer open hearts, open minds and open doors to all those in need.

Vision
Our Vision:  To live as disciples of Christ.
We accept God’s call to know, experience and share God’s transforming love.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Values
Our Core Values:  As a witnessing community of faith in word and deed, we are committed to the following core values:

Sacramental congregational worship
Through baptism we rejoice in God’s forgiveness and the invitation to each of us to join in God’s family of believers. Through Holy Communion we remember Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

Service, mission, and evangelism
As faithful disciples, we share God’s love and grace by serving others.

Spiritual growth and formation
Opportunities are available for every individual to grow spiritually and to deepen one’s personal relationship with God.

Respect and compassion for all of God’s children
We strive to be an open, loving congregation offering a warm and welcoming environment to all of God’s children.

Ministry to one another within this Body of Christ
We are a multi-generational, supportive, and nurturing Christian family.

Christian education
Study of the Scriptures and additional Christian studies provide a strong foundation for our faith journey and equip us as disciples to better lead a Christ-like life.

Strategic Map
ImageA Strategic Mapping Team, consisting of 33 church members, was organized and charged with the task of discerning the path God intends our church to follow to fully realize our MVV. The goal of the Strategic Mapping Team was the creation of a map for HBUMC, clarifying our direction and guiding us on our journey, as a congregation and as individual disciples. The team produced the Strategic Map which was officially adopted by the Administrative Board on May 17th, 2006.

Sanctuary Renovation Update

Sanctuary Renovation Update - May 1st

The following is a brief update from Dickie Thompson of the construction activities that have taken place in the Sanctuary since the Administrative Board approved the project on Wednesday April 23, 2008. On Sunday afternoon April 20, 2008 after the last 11AM church service approximately 27 ASP youth and 10 adults started removing the bibles, hymn books, and papers from the Sanctuary for storage. The pew cushions were also removed and will be stored off site. The old red carpeting was pulled up and disposed.

The week of April 21-25 was a busy one. All the pews were removed. They will be stored in Clinton, NC where they will be refinished before returning in the fall. The organ was removed as well as the walls that surrounded the pipes. Most of the major demolition has been done with the exception of the asbestos abatement which will start on Monday May 5th. The asbestos floor tile will be removed first followed by the plaster ceilings and soffits. This work should take approximately 2 weeks.

A testing lab will be used to check the area to make sure we are “asbestos free” and the area is safe for all.

Columbarium
THE VISION
For years members of our church have envisioned a Columbarium on our church property.  A committee engaged in two years of study and exploration before recommending that the first phase be located in the Prayer Room, the former Stone Street entrance into the Sanctuary.  This quiet, peaceful area will be open and accessible for prayer, meditation, visitation and remembrance whenever the church building is open.
