Here our Lord delivers the parable of the soils, or sower. The figures on the right represent all the people who heard Him and on the left those who came seeking help. Below the figure of Christ is portrayed the sowing of the Word as grains of wheat falling into the ground - some seed springing up and other seed being devoured by the birds of the air.

Jesus offers an explanation to his disciples. “The hard path where some of the seed fell represents the heart of a person who hears the good news and doesn’t understand it. The shallow rocky soil represents the heart of a person who receives the message with joy, but the seeds don’t root very deeply, and when trouble comes, or persecution begins, he drops out. The ground covered with thistles represents a person who hears the message, but the cares of this life choke out God’s Word, and he does less and less for God. The good ground represents the heart of a man who listens to the message and understands it, and goes out and brings thirty, sixty, or even one hundred others into the Kingdom.” Matthew 13 (LNT)
