The Crucifixion

Image
Given in memory of her mother Mrs. Mary Brewer Bostick by Mrs. Ralph Stephens
"So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place of the skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews’.” John 19:17 (RSV)

The scene here shows Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and John before the cross. “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved, standing near, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold thy son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” John 19: 26-27 (RSV)

On each side are the other crosses, and at the foot of the cross the thorn bush is pictured rather than the crown of thorns. At the top of the window, the clouds are covering the sun as darkness begins to fall upon the scene.

In the lower portion of the window the scourging of Christ is depicted by the pillar to which he was tied, the whip with its thongs which lashed him, as well as the spear which pierced his side.
