Image
Given in memory of their son Morris Martin Bernstein by Mr. & Mrs. P. M. Bernstein
Jesus asked that the disciples prepare a place for them to eat the Passover meal. When they had gathered, Jesus told them he would be betrayed. “Now as they were eating, Jesus took the bread, and blessed, and broke it, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” Matthew 26:26-28 (RSV) This window depicts the elements universally used in the Sacrament of Communion; the cup representing Jesus’ blood, the bread on the table representing his body. The nimbus or halo behind the cup designates the divinity of Christ. The artist pictures only some of those who were present.

The chalice with the cross above it suggests Christ’s compassionate forgiveness. In the right corner of the window is the remorseful figure of Peter and the cock representing Peter’s denial of Jesus. “Peter declared to him, ‘Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I say to you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.’”Matthew 26:34 (RSV)
