The Resurrection

Image
Given in memory of George D. Richardson by his family
"Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the sepulcher. And behold there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone, and sat upon it. . . . and for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he is risen, as he said.’” Matthew 28:1-6 (RSV)

Here Christ is shown with an upraised hand, signifying that he is alive forever more. Piercing the heavens is the hand of God whose power has raised Jesus from the dead. Christ holds a flowing white banner as he rises from the grave, signifying his victory over death. At the open tomb are the figures representing the guards who slept and the soldiers seized with terror. Symbols in the lower window show the nails and the golden crown of the resurrected Christ superimposed on the crown of thorns. The three crosses of Golgotha are in the lower right corner.
