Tote Bag Missions Fundraiser

TOTE BAG CONSTRUCTION TO BENEFIT HBUMC MISSIONS

If you can cut a straight line or sew a straight stitch you can help HBUMC raise funds for Missions. This project is ongoing through the fall of 2010.

The Environmental Educators of NC (EENC) has contracted with HBUMC to construct 1,000 tote bags made from retired work shirts. The totes will be given out at a future conference and serve as “goodie bags” for participants. EENC chose to re-purpose these shirts into bags instead of ordering a new product from China.

HBUMC will be paid $5.00 for each completed bag and all proceeds go towards Missions. In 2009 several members constructed 200 tote bags and our church was presented a check for $1,000. This next phase gives us the opportunity to raise $5,000 in 2010.

HOW TO HELP: you can cut and/or sew at your own home or you can organize a group to work at the church. This is a perfect project for Circles and Sunday Schools.

Be a small part of a large project.

You will be provided with instructions and materials to make the tote bags. You may choose to only cut. Or you may choose to only sew. Or, you can do both. The only thing you need to provide is thread for sewing.

Contact the following people to receive a kit of 25 shirts or to schedule someone to show your group how to proceed:

One Hunger...One World...One Church...One Year…

Our Mission: To join Stop Hunger Now to end hunger within our lifetime

Our Goals:
  • Package 250,000 meals in 2010
  • Raise $62,500 to pay for these meals

Our Progress to Date: (Updated June 2010)
  • Total Money Raised to Date = $55,155
  • Total Meals Packaged to Date = 179,936

Hunger Facts:
  • There are nearly 850 million hungry people in the world
  • A child dies every 15 seconds because of malnourishment
  • There is enough food in the world to feed everyone 4.3 pounds of food every day
Volunteering Facts:
  • On average: 100 meals per hour per volunteer
  • Packaging and fundraising are intergenerational activities. There are jobs for every age!
Financial Contributions are needed! Please consider coordinating your own fundraising project for this event.

Some ideas for raising money include:
  • organize a yard sale
  • coordinate a "walk-a-thon" with your friends and have people sponsor $0.25 for every quarter mile walked
  • ask your favorite restaurant to put out a collection box for coins for our cause
  • solicit support from your co-workers/company to make a financial contribution to our project
  • place $1/day in a jar for the remainder of the Lenten Season
  • continue to bring your loose change (preferably quarters) to church and place in the Quarter Meallion Collection Box in the Lobby.

A sincere thank-you goes out to the entire congregation for your passionate support of this project. Your prayers, presence, and financial gifts are appreciated!

Wednesday Family Meals

Wednesday night family meals will begin on August 26. The new Kitchen Ministry team has been hard at work this summer, planning and preparing to support another exciting school year of Wednesday night family meals. Here are a few things we want to highlight before the school year starts:

  • Fellowship: Wednesday evening meals are a great chance to fellowship with your church family. Use this opportunity to get to know other church members a little bit better, through sharing stories and developing relationships. Some of the best friendships are fostered over sharing a meal together.
  • Varied menus: The menu will vary from week to week, with selections that are delicious, healthy, and have kid-friendly choices. The price will remain at $6 per adult and $3 per child (10 and younger). We will publish the menu in advance on our website and in the Commissioner to make planning easier for families.
  • Fundraisers: Wednesday evening meals can be a great fundraiser for Sunday school classes, mission teams, and any other church group. Your group can choose from a set menu provided by the Kitchen Ministry or plan your own meal. Contact the Kitchen Calendar Coordinator, Jennifer Winstead ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 832-8781) for date coordination and details.
  • Volunteers: We need volunteers to help make these family meals a success. Each week, we need help with setup, monitoring, and cleanup. If you plan to attend a Wednesday meal, please consider helping. Time involvement is minimal. Look for signup sheets for these duties starting on August 26th or contact Paula Buckhalt at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 832-6435 x28.

We look forward to a great year and great fellowship with our Hayes Barton family!
- The HBUMC Kitchen Ministry Team

Autumnfest
In early Fall, we welcome back members who have moved away and we celebrate Hayes Barton UMC's rich heritage.  After the 11:00 a.m. worship service, we gather in the Church Fellowship Hall for an old-fashioned covered dish luncheon and fellowship with old and new church family members.  Entertainment is provided.

Easter Sunrise Breakfast
After our Easter Sunrise Service, join with us in our traditional Hayes Barton Easter Sunrise Breakfast in the Church Fellowship Hall.  Come as you are and share in the joy of Easter with our church family.

Summer Activities
Activities include Vacation Bible School and other special activities planned and coordinated by teachers and parents.  Children are encouraged to participate in Conference Camps and other district events.  Other opportunities include the Acolyte Program, All Church Retreats, Choirs, and Advent Activities.

Our Regular Events

Fellowship Hour - Fellowship Ministry coordinates the Sunday morning “Fellowship Hour”, where coffee, juice and breakfast treats are made available on the patio (weather permitting) or inside the church. These refreshments are available after the 8:30 service until the start of the 11:00 service. Please join us!

Wednesday Evening Fellowship - From September through May, the entire church body has the opportunity to meet for a prepared supper in the Church Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. Cost is minimal. Call the church office to make reservations before noon Mondays. After a relaxed time of eating and fellowship and a brief time of sharing, we engage in Bible Study or workshops on a variety of topics. Children are also involved in Bible Study and choir programs. Older youth may participate in other activities. Child care is available.

Each year in early Fall, our Wednesday night program features 5 weeks of bible study taught by Dr. Mickey Efird, a local favorite.

Our Annual Events

FallFest is a big evening of food, fun and fellowship for all ages. Activities include Karaoke, Bingo, Inflatables, Face Painting, Cake Walk, Dunking Booth and more. Everyone is encouraged to dress-up in family-friendly costumes.

Shrove Tuesday symbolizes a night of fun and festivities before delving into the somber and reflective days of Lent. Our Youth serve a pancake dinner, accompanied by a Dixieland Jazz Band. Games and activities are available all around the grounds.

Advent Workshop - Though this event is different every year, the intent is to focus on the meaning of the season while engaging in fun group activities. The workshop is typically offered at the beginning of the Advent Season.
