he Missions Committee has prayerfully adopted the following projects for 2007-2008. We invite and encourage members of the congregation to participate in these projects as volunteers who can make a vital difference in the lives of others. Come with a friend or family member and experience a new challenge and joy as you “move beyond the cradle” and eagerly serve others.

The warehouse will be open Tuesday and Saturday, from 10 – 3, beginning Tuesday, February 2nd. Due to recent inclement weather, the warehouse will be open an extra day, Thursday, February 4th, 10-3.

Volunteers are needed at the warehouse to accept deliveries, assemble health kits, sort, build boxes, weigh, and palletize. Some jobs can be done sitting down, but most will require standing, and some require heavy lifting. Due to safety concerns, please bring only children who are 12 years or older. Warehouse organizers cannot guarantee that you will have things to do the entire time you are there, as deliveries are sporadic, but “down-time” will provide wonderful opportunities for fellowship.

It is preferable to have at least 8 people at the warehouse for all shifts. If you would like to volunteer, please call ahead to set up a time: Contact Kellie Baker: 919-961-9618,  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Please bring your lunch, snacks and drinks with you. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the premises.

We have all been shocked and numbed by the unbelievable images and stories of despair that only begin to tell the story of the aftermath following the earthquake in Haiti. Offering help to Haiti will be an on-going ministry of commitment. Our response to Haiti will be an on-going ministry of commitment.

The following is a guide to keep you informed about how you may help with Hayes Barton's effort to assist the people of Haiti, and preliminary plans for our response over the coming months.

Food Collection
The Raleigh District of the United Methodist Church, of which HBUMC is a part, has been tasked with collecting food items for the people of Haiti. Please bring the following items to the church**:

  • New, unopened & sealed bags of dried beans
  • New, unopened & sealed bags of rice
  • New, unopened cans of vegetables (any size with pop top lid)
  • New, unopened cans of fruits (any size with pop top lid)

It is important to note that unlike the health kits, all food items will be sorted into boxes of like items in preparation for shipment, so there is no need to 'assemble' the kits before bringing them to the church. We have three shipment dates, which are listed below. Please bring your items to the church parlor on or prior to these dates:

  • Sunday, February 14th
  • Sunday, March 21st

Crutch and Cane Collection:
Physicians for Peace has sent out a plea for new/used crutches and canes. Once collected, local ministry, Hearts and Hands for Haiti, will coordinate shipping to Haiti with Physicians for Peace. Contact Helen and Freddy Johnson ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) for more information.

**Both food and crutches/canes will be collected in the hallway, just outside of the church parlor.

Helping in the Raleigh District Warehouse
The collection site for the Raleigh District is a warehouse owned by HBUMC member, Trevor Spear. This warehouse will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10-3. Volunteers are needed at the warehouse during these times in order to accept deliveries, assemble health kits, sort, build boxes, weigh and palletize. If you would like to help with this effort, click here for more information.

Additionally, Hayes Barton has been asked to work at the distribution center to sort, pack and palletize on Saturday, Feb 27th (time TBA). This will take place at the MERCI center in Goldsboro. Mark your calendars and watch for more information as we get closer to that date.

Hayes Barton is organizing an Early Response Team (ERT) that anticipates traveling to Haiti in March to assist in the recovery effort of the St. Joseph's Family homes. This team can begin work as soon as the situation has been stabilized by professional "first responders" already on the ground. Assistance in funding this team is needed, and you can make contributions designated for this effort below or by making checks payable to HBUMC with "Disaster Fund" in the memo line.

The ongoing Quarter of a Meal-lion project in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, which has already packaged over 60,000 meals, will send our meals to Haiti. All slots for the February 20th packaging event were filled in less than a week, and the event is now sold out. Look for more packing opportunities to be organized soon. Financial contributions are needed to pay for the meals that we pack. You may contribute by making checks to HBUMC with "Quarter of a Meal-lion" in the memo line, or directly to this effort below.

The Haiti Youth Mission trip, which will take place in early June, will have to be reorganized into a mission focused on recovery. We will still send a team in June, as our brothers and sisters in Haiti will need our help more than ever. The details, exact scope of the trip, and any personnel refinements will become more clear in the coming weeks, as the needs of our partners in the St. Joseph Family are assessed. Please continue to support this team's ongoing fundraising efforts, such as the upcoming Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Feb. 16th.

Our two Central American Mission Teams bound for Guatemala and Costa Rica will fulfill their missions as scheduled for mid February. The Outreach Pathway feels strongly that we honor our commitments to our missionary partners and their ongoing programs for church construction and tangible poverty relief. With plane tickets and travel arrangements for 33 members in place, any diversion of resources at this late juncture would result in considerable forfeiture of capital.

Thanks to you all for your faithfulness in giving of your time, talents and money to be the hands and feet of Christ. Hayes Barton is richly blessed and as such, much is expected from us. Truly, God is doing greater things through this community of faith!
