Music and Arts

God is the ultimate Creator. And in each of us, made in God’s image, there is a desire to express ourselves creatively and through the arts. At Hayes Barton UMC the arts ministry seeks to provide a means for members to use their creative gifts to the glory of God. Through music, drama, and the visual arts, individuals can praise and worship God with the beauty of sight and sound.

Music is an integral part of Hayes Barton UMC worship and church life. Members embrace a diverse, eclectic mix of hymns, praise songs, choral music, instrumental solos and accompaniment, children’s anthems, and pieces by handbell choirs. At weekly services and at special events presented throughout the year, our music program enhances the worship experience of all who attend.

The dramatic and visual arts also play a key role in worship at Hayes Barton UMC. Large-scale musicals and plays, dramatic sketches within services, and integration of visual art pieces that elucidate liturgical themes are presented throughout the year to inspire and challenge worshippers.

Dramatic and Visual Arts

HBUMC has a unique focus on drama and the visual arts, using these art forms in worship to further enhance communion with our Creator. Church members have produced, developed, and starred in many productions such as “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”(2002), a Christmas Madrigal dinner (2004), the original “Christmas Mosaic”(2005) featuring live tableaux of famous paintings along with choral and handbell music, a tree-lighting, and live Nativity. Building upon that success, subsequent “Christmas Mosaics”(in 2007 and 2009) featured festive Christmas celebrations with full orchestra and choir, horse-drawn carriage rides, outdoor drama, and even snow sledding. In 2008, the West End musical “Children of Eden” played to sold-out houses over several nights. Pictures from many of these events are available on HBUMC's Facebook page.

A revival of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be produced in May 2011. Auditions will be held the second week of January...look for more information soon.

Hayes Barton Methodist frequently collaborates with community artists in commissioning unique pieces of art that are the culmination of selected season thematics. “Defining Moments” celebrates the marking of important times of our lives in a mosaic of recycled watchfaces designed by Daniel Kelly of Clearscapes architecture design firm. Painter, Kathy Ammon, created a dramatic contrast of light and darkness over the course of four Advent services of meditation. In 2008, cloths were seasoned in pray through our Lenten journey and bound together by fabric artist, Peg Gignoux, in festive paraments that are now used when Holy Communion is celebrated in traditional and contemporary worship. 2010's theme, “Rooted in Christ, Growing in Love”, was brought to life by artist, Jeff Hurr, in a 15-ft. metal tree and root sculpture from whose branches hung hundreds of mirrors that reminded the congregation how they were individually “Reflecting Christ”.
