Life Transition - Frances McLean
Written by Frances McLean

Two years ago my husband of 58 years died. He had been ill with caner, which was in remission, and with dementia which became increasingly worse over a period of five or six years. With constant prayer, God’s strength and a supportive family, I was able to keep him at home until the last six weeks of his life which were spend under hospice in a nursing home. His death was a blessing and God gave my family and me comfort, peace and guidance as we faced our loss.

The time came for me to sell my home of over fifty years and move to Raleigh where my two daughters and their husbands live. Deciding what to sell, what to give my family and others and what to keep was a very traumatic experience! God was with us, guiding the decisions we had to make.

Finally I moved and was settled in an apartment here in Raleigh. I had lived in Lumberton, NC for over 60 years. It wasn’t an easy thing to do! But God was with me!

The first time I worshipped at HBUMC, I felt I was “at home”. Jennifer Hollerung helped me adjust to a new church home. I had been a member of Chestnut Street UMC all of my married life. Bill Wood called to invite me to Asbury-King Sunday School Class. Harriet Habel invited me to Circle 2 and the fall tea of UMW. Jo Garrett invited me to eat at her table the first time I attended the Wednesday night supper, followed by Dr. Efird’s Bible Study. It was difficult at first to find my way around such a different situation.

As I have met and now know many of the members of HBUMC I have been caught up in the warm fellowship of prayer, Bible Study, visiting friends, greeting at church services, Grand Age Club and teaching Sunday School class on occasion. My life is full and joyful and involved in the many activities of HBUMC. God is good and I am blessed!
