In Luke’s parable, Jesus tells the Pharisee that he can learn from a sinner on the outskirts of Jewish society what it means to be righteous. The Pharisee expects God to look on him with approval, but it is to the repentant sinner that God looks with the accepting smile. We see another turn-around, a reversal of expectations.
